A modern dance piece and premier company work presented at the 2012 Cool NY 9th Anniversary Dance Festival; The Block depicts the dehumanizing auctioning of slaves. Four women reenact the actual process of a slave auction while performatively re-presenting the torture these slaves endured.
“The slaves would be brought from the pen, in turn, to stand on a raised platform so that they could be seen by the buyers; they would have to endure being poked, prodded and forced to open their mouths for the buyers.”
